Pharmapick vs. Vertical Carousel
Pharmapick (blue line) outperforms vertical carousels (green line) in cost-effectiveness, automation, inventory management, safety, space usability, and staff productivity. While its initial investment is higher, Pharmapick's lower total cost of ownership (TCO) over ten years proves more beneficial. Vertical carousels offer lower upfront costs but lag in key performance areas, making Pharmapick the superior choice for hospital pharmacy operations.
Pharmapick vs. Unitdose Robots
Pharmapick (blue line) outperforms unit dose robots (red line) in cost-effectiveness, flexibility, safety, space usability, and staff productivity. With a lower initial investment and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over ten years, Pharmapick provides significant long-term benefits.

While unit dose robots excel in automation and inventory management, their higher costs and limited flexibility make them less adaptable, positioning Pharmapick as the more versatile and cost-effective solution.
Pharmapick Vs. Open Shelving
Pharmapick (blue line) outperforms open shelving (orange line) in cost-effectiveness, automation, inventory management, safety, space usability, and staff productivity. Though Pharmapick’s initial investment is higher, its lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over ten years provides greater long-term benefits.

Open shelving has a minimal upfront cost but lacks automation, safety, and efficiency, making Pharmapick the superior choice for modern Central Pharmacy operations focused on safety and productivity.

Payback
This chart illustrates the cost-effectiveness of Pharmapick compared to unit dose robots, vertical carousels, and open shelving over a 10-year period for average European Costs.

Pharmapick demonstrates the lowest total cost of ownership, with a payback period of 32 months versus vertical carousels and 25 months versus open shelving.

While unit dose robots offer high automation, their total cost far exceeds Pharmapick’s, making Pharmapick the more efficient and economical choice for long-term hospital pharmacy operations.

Disclaimer: Payback projections depend on each client’s unique context. A detailed assessment is advised.

Centro Hospital do Porto is one of the main hospitals in Portugal with 800 beds in unit dose system. Our central pharmacy has invested in Pharmapick (...) to increase the security of dispensing and to reduce the operational costs. (...) The use of the robot for preparing unit dose allowed reducing the time devoted to this task from 35 to 26 work hours daily. The robot dispenses approximately 2900 picking lines daily (...). Pharmapick is a very recommendable solution for hospital pharmacies and (...) we keep showing it in conferences.

Director of Pharmaceutical Services of Unidade Local de Saúde de Santo António

UNIHEALTH is the Brazilian leading Hospital Logistics service provider. Because we are always seeking to cut operating costs and increased safety to patients, we decided to invest in Pharmapick, being the first unit installed in Hospital IPSEMG, a 400 beds hospital located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. That decision has proven cost-effective: we have increased productivity, eliminated 3 satellite pharmacies, reduced the workforce in 10 people and - last but not the least - complains from dispensing errors were eliminated.

When I learnt about your project and observed the prototype at Hospital Santo Antonio (Porto-Portugal), I was so impressed that I wrote a paper for “Executive Digest” magazine. (...) Pharmapick impressed me with its ability to “listen” to customer needs and specific hospital requirements. (...) You designed a system that represents a new paradigm in Hospital Central Pharmacy, gathering complex features such as Security, Fast dispensing, Flexibility, Simplicity of Use, and Patient Safety. (...) I am looking forward to learning more about your new innovations."

Jose Crespo Carvalho, MBA, MSc, PhD, AGG
Full Professor at ISCTE, IUL Lisbon

As the President of the Hospital Unidade Local de Saude de Matosinhos, we were very pleased to learn about Pharmapick. (...) We do believe Pharmapick generates significant savings and benefits in the hospital environment, with applications such as Central Pharmacy Automation, Surgery Center dispensing, or blood storage. We look forward to equipping our hospital with Pharmapick; however, due to the current economic context and budget constraints, we are unable to invest in the short term. (...) I do believe Pharmapick has great potential in the worldwide hospital market, especially in those using unit dose systems.

Dr Victor Herdeiro
FMR President of Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos

It’s obvious that Pharmapick means an important advance in the automation process in hospital central pharmacy. (...) The most relevant are: 1. Only one item to the operator: it prevents errors in both picking and replenishment operations. 2. Two workstations: allows simultaneous workflows. 3. Two workstations: increases productivity compared to vertical carousels. 4. Emergency access mode: ensures 100% system availability. 5. Integration of different temperatures: enables storing all required drugs in one system with no need for additional units.
